Taking Swimming Teaching to a Whole New Level 6 November 2008

A UK Coaching Certificate/Amateur Swimming Teaching level 2 course was held recently at the National Sports Centre in Douglas.

Ten candidates were put through 60 hours of learning/assessment, spread over three weeks, which involved practical swimming sessions along with log book and assessment task work. This is the first time the new syllabus has been held on the Isle of Man.

The Department of Tourism and Leisure Minister Hon Martyn Quayle MHK said:

‘Swimming teaching has changed dramatically over the last few years with a lot of emphasis now being placed on the Long Term Athlete Development Plan which sets out how the swimmer/athlete develops over a period of time.’

The candidates were also introduced to the new ASA National Swim Plan for Teaching. The Swimming Plan provides a framework for the swimmer to develop a wide range of skills and incorporates lifesaving and water polo.

Tutor, Mary Doyle was impressed by the hard work and attitude of the candidates and took the opportunity to thank the National Sports Centre staff. She also expressed her appreciation to the Department of Education’s swimming teacher, Theresa Smith, and Val Ward of the Douglas Swimming Club, for the use of their swimming sessions for the practical assessment.

Mary continued: ‘It was a really enjoyable course with all the candidates working extremely hard to achieve their level 2 teaching aquatics. Their commitment and dedication over the course of 60 hours was fantastic.’

It is planned to run an ASA Helpers course, starting in January, with two UKCC/ASA level 1 courses in February and October next year. Further details can be found by contacting Pauline Glennon, activities officer at the NSC.
