Young Drivers 2008 Wrap-up Event 3 November 2008

The final event of Young Driver 2008 campaign will be held at the Sea Terminal on the evening of Friday, 7th November between 6pm – 9pm.

The wrap-up event will draw to a close a campaign that was aimed at promoting road safety amongst the Island’s young drivers. A number of events and promotions have taken place throughout the year including opening up the first ‘motorway’ on the Island at the Young Driver Motorfest Track Day at Jurby, testing young driver’s skills at the driving skills challenge and a hazard perception challenge.

Road Safety Manager, Gordon Edwards said:

‘The Young Driver 2008 campaign started in February of this year with a fantastic launch party and we are really pleased with the response we have had from the young people of the Island. The events have all been well attended and we have hopefully helped to raise the awareness of driving safely and respectfully during the crucial early years of their driving lives.’

The wrap-up event will provide young drivers with the opportunity to celebrate the successes of Young Driver 2008 while enjoying live music and having the opportunity to visit many stalls and attractions on offer. There will be a competition for the best turned out car and various competitions and prizes offered throughout the evening. Refreshments will be provided.

Minister for Transport, David Anderson MHK said:

‘Young Driver 2008 was born out of the realisation that young drivers in the 16 – 25 age group are involved in a quarter of all road accidents in the Isle of Man. The events which have been held this year have provided young drivers with the opportunity to improve their driving standards as well as encouraging better attitudes towards driving and vehicle maintenance.
‘We needed to make the campaign something which people would want to get involved in and I think that we have achieved this with the attendance we have seen at all of the events.
‘A special announcement of a brand new initiative will be made on the evening which will affect the future of all road users.’

The Road Safety Unit will be mailing out invites for the evening to all people who have registered on youngdriver2008.im but anybody is welcome to attend. Further information will be released in the week leading up to the event and will be available at www.youngdriver2008.im
