Firefighters to update Island’s risk profile 8 October 2008

Brian Draper GIFireE - Chief Fire Officer THE Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service is calling on the support of the Manx community as it embarks on a fact-finding initiative aimed at reducing the threat of emergency incidents.

Firefighters will be visiting various homes and businesses over the coming months as part of an Island-wide scheme. They will hold discussions with owners and occupiers in order to produce an evidence-based risk profile of the Isle of Man. This research will then be combined with historical information to help shape the future direction of the Fire Service.

Minister for Home Affairs Adrian Earnshaw MHK said:

‘In order to deliver the most appropriate prevention, protection and response measures required to meet modern-day challenges, it is necessary to research and evaluate the risks to life, our economy, our heritage and the environment. This risk identification programme will provide the foundation for maintaining an efficient and effective Fire and Rescue Service in the Island. I would urge members of the public to play their part by assisting the firefighters during their visits.’

The Integrated Risk Management Planning (IRMP) process is being co-ordinated by a team of three officers. They will seek the views of residents and identify the potential risks within local household and business environments.

Chief Fire Officer Brian Draper said:

‘In acknowledging that providing a modern Fire and Rescue Service is much more than simply responding to emergency calls, we will require the support, partnership and co-operation of many individuals and organisations. In turn, we will seek out every opportunity to contribute towards the improved social, economic and environmental wellbeing of the Isle of Man.’

Anybody who has yet to be contacted about the IRMP process but would like to take part should contact Station Officer John Bellis on 647310 or email john.bellis@gov.im
