MNH Half Term Craft Workshops a success! 17 November 2008

Vicky Bevis (9) painting her miniature clay replica.Manx National Heritage celebrated the beginning of its Winter Event Programme with a series of craft workshops for children during October half term at The House of Manannan in Peel which revealed the “Stories in the Stones” to over 130 children.

The workshop provided an opportunity for children to learn more about the great stories carved into stones around the Isle of Man whilst painting a miniature clay replica of Thorwald’s Cross which shows the Norse God, Odin and the Fenris Wolf. The cross itself shows a scene of Norse mythology and a scene where gods and the heroes go forth to battle.

The children were told a story giving them the background to some of the carvings on the magnificent Thorwald's Cross.

The story teller and presenter Stephen Lillie said:

Vicky Bevis (9) with her painted miniature clay replica."This was a unique workshop where young people gained an understanding to the stories behind the Manx Stone Carvings on Thorwald's Cross, one of the most delicately carved Manx Stone crosses on the Island. The participants use media specially suited to painting a small replica of the cross on clay. What was particularly noted was the concentration and attention to detail given by all those who attended. It was a wonderful way for young people to learn about the Island's unique history."

Anthea Young, Education Services Officer for Manx National Heritage said:

“The workshop was possible by the expertise of Peter Webb, who kindly replicated the image for the slabs to be reproduced by the hard work of the Friends of Manx National Heritage. I would also like to thank Stephen Lillie for his work in making the stories come alive!”

All children participating in the workshop received an Educational Discovery Voucher, which can be used for a free return visit to the House of Manannan over the winter months!
