Mann’s attitudes to Druids 7 January 2009

Professor Ronald Hutton, Professor of History at Bristol UniOn Friday 16th January 2009 Manx National Heritage will host an evening lecture in the Manx Museum Lecture Theatre entitled “The Druids”. The lecture is open to all and admission is free. Doors will open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

The lecture will be given by Professor Ronald Hutton, Professor of History at Bristol University and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Society of Antiquaries. Professor Hutton is a leading authority on ancient and medieval paganism and one of the most recognised historians on British television.

Professor Hutton’s most recent book examines how the Druids emerge in history and what evidence, if any, has led to popular perceptions of the movement. In his lecture Professor Hutton hopes to expand on these themes and, in particular, answer the following questions: what can we know about the ancient Druids, and why did they become so important to the Georgian and Victorian British? Professor Hutton commented:

A watercolour of a Druid by Manx Artist, John Caley."The Isle of Man traditionally has a special relationship with the ancient Druids, based on the identification of it with the famed Isle of Mona. Writings about Druids on Mann exemplify the many different attitudes taken to them throughout Britain; and this lecture examines those, and what they actually tell us about ourselves."

This year marks the third appearance of Professor Hutton on the Winter Lecture Programme and many will remember his moving talk on the English Civil War last year. “The Druids” promises to be equally fascinating.

For anyone wishing to find out more about the lecture programme, together with events and exhibitions at the Manx Museum or House of Manannan over the winter months, Manx National Heritage invite you to collect a free What’s On leaflet from any Manx National Heritage site.
