Firefighters rescue cat from water wheel 3 August 2010

Fire crews from Douglas were called out to rescue a cat that had become trapped underneath the bottom of a restored waterwheel at a property in Glen Vine this afternoon (Tuesday, August 3, 2010).

The callout came at 2.30pm and upon arrival crews could hear the cat crying out for help and in a distressed state. The cat had been discovered by the owner of the property who had heard it crying for help. Due to the inaccessibility of its location the property owner decided to call the emergency services.

Firefighters managed to locate the cat, which was stuck fast between one of the waterwheel's narrow buckets and the concrete base of the well.

Two firefighters climbed down into the basin of the wheel and with the assistance of colleagues managed to free the cat.

Leading fire-fighter Colin Kirkham commented:

'The cat had obviously been in the wheel for some time and was very distressed and shaking. As soon as a sachet of cat food was offered it wasted no time in grabbing it out of the hands of the firefighter trying to feed it.'

The cat thankfully had a collar with its owners' details on it, and they were promptly contacted and overjoyed that their cat had been found safe and well.

Leading Firefighter Kirkham said:

'Fire crews are often called to rescue animals from precarious places however in my 20 years of service I have never had to rescue one from a waterwheel!'

Firefighters spent around 30 minutes at the incident. One pump from Douglas attended.
