Chief Minister welcomes Estonian Ambassador to Island 20 June 2012 THE Isle of Man is continuing to raise its international profile by strengthening political and economic links with countries around the world.
Chief Minister Allan Bell MHK this week welcomed Her Excellency Aino Lepik von Wiren, Estonian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, on a two-day visit to the Island. The Ambassador, who was accompanied by Ms Karmen Laus, Deputy Head of Mission (Political Affairs), gained an overview of the Isle of Man economy during meetings with the Chief Minister, Treasury Minister Eddie Teare MHK and senior Government officers. The Isle of Man and Estonia signed a Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) in 2009 and this weeks visit enabled the two countries to develop their relationship and explore potential new business opportunities. Estonia has a strong information technology and telecommunications sector and is establishing a solid reputation for innovation in e-commerce and e-government. The possibility of closer co-operation in a number of industries, in particular e-gaming, was discussed during a series of presentations to showcase the Isle of Mans diverse economic offering. As well as strengthening economic ties, the Ambassadors visit continued the Chief Ministers policy of proactive engagement with other nations in order to help promote a deeper understanding of the Island and its role within the international community. Mr Bell said: I am delighted that Her Excellency accepted my invitation to visit the Isle of Man. Our two countries already enjoy a good working relationship as a result of the DTA and our discussions, I believe, have identified a number of new areas to build on. In these challenging times it is important to raise the Islands profile and seek to work with our international partners to create new business and investment opportunities. Her Excellency Aino Lepik von Wiren commented: Estonia worked hard to develop its economy and to obtain entry into the European single currency in January 2011, and is always looking to build positive relations with other nations. I have been impressed by the diversity of the Isle of Mans economy, and I look forward to further strengthening the alliance between our two countries to create mutually beneficial opportunities. As well as attending a number of official engagements, the Estonian delegation also took the opportunity to experience the Isle of Mans unique culture and heritage by visiting several Manx National Heritage sites.
