Work on Douglas Harbour Flapgates 24 November 2003

As part of a planned maintenance programme the Department of Transport intends to replace the 2 hydraulic cylinders that operate the water-retaining flap-gate, situated below the Millennium Bridge, Douglas. The work will be carried out in 2 stages so that disruption is kept to a minimum.

It is intended to replace one cylinder over the period 20th November to 1st December inclusive. The second cylinder changeover date has yet to be fixed but will be advised well in advance.

In order that the harbour does not have to return to its tidal condition, the water will be retained by fixed stop-logs for the duration of the work. This will be from the 28th November 2003 at 5.30am until the work is completed, but no later than the 1st December at 1.00am. The use of fixed stop-logs will enable the flapgate to be taken out of operation, to facilitate the cylinder changeover, without affecting the retained water level, over low water. During this period no vessels will be able to pass in or out of the harbour.

The work will be undertaken by the Departmentís Works Division and will require a road closure, as a crane will have to be situated on the Millennium Bridge.

The Department regrets any inconvenience that this work will cause but hopes that by scheduling it for this time of year and at these times, that disruption will be kept to a minimum.

Further information may be obtained from Captain John Clayton, Port Manager, Douglas on telephone 686923 or by calling at Harbour Control, Sea Terminal Building, Douglas.
