Douglas Celebrates 7 July 2004 Manx National Week events organised by Douglas
Corporation are now under way.
Shops and schools are involved in 2004 events. These include a river race
designed to teach children about the Dhoo and the Glass on Friday, July 9 for
the children of Anagh Coar School, a poster competition for youth clubs, that is
displayed in the borough library, and a 'best dressed shop window' competition,
with cash prizes, a photographic exhibition charting the progress of the
Island's capital at the Town Hall, and musical entertainment on the promenade
and in Villiers Square on Saturday, July 10.
Chairman of the Manx National Week committee, Councillor Glenda Corkish said:
"The finale to the week is Saturday night in Villiers Square when the Mayor
will be performing the first drum roll before the group Urban Strawberry Lunch
beat the funk out of junk at 10pm. Throughout the day on Saturday, we have a
litter awareness theme, Don't Rubbish Douglas, aiming
to keep our town clean and tidy."
A Four ball Better ball golf competition will be held this Thursday and anybody
who wants to join in should contact Douglas Golf Club.
Councillor Corkish said:
"Once again, we are involving as many people as possible and the response has
been fantastic. Manx National Week 2005 is a long way away but we will soon be
planning events and I would really like to hear from the public, as I'm sure
people have some great ideas that we can incorporate into next year's
celebrations.
"We have also been asked to take part in Sea IoM 2005, which commemorates the
200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. We would be delighted to hear from
anybody with ideas for this event too. We do need your help to make these events
memorable."
