First-Time Buyer Homes 9 July 2004

A “Ground Breaking” ceremony took place at the former Queens Hotel site in Ramsey on Friday. It marked the start of a project following receipt by the Department of Local Government and the Environment of Planning Approval for a development of 50 apartments including 27 first-time buyer units along with associated car-parking. The ceremony was performed by Anne Craine, MHK, Member of the Department with responsibility for Estates and Housing. Mrs. Craine is also one of the 2 Constituency Members for Ramsey.

Also present to witness the ceremony were other representatives of the Department; Treasury Minister and Member for Ramsey, the Hon. Alan Bell, MHK; representatives of Ramsey Town Commissioners; and the Developer, Dandara Contracting Ltd.

Mrs. Craine, MHK, stated:

"I am extremely pleased that this project has reached a milestone when we will shortly see the work commencing on site. Ramsey, like many places on the Island, needs affordable housing for local people who wish to own their first home. This will be an excellent location for the residents with easy access to the town centre and the seafront. It will also tidy up a site that has lain derelict for many years since the Hotel was demolished following the dreadful fire.

"The former Hotel site has been cleared since the 1980s, but the first works that will be seen in coming months will be demolition of three adjacent properties on Stanley Mount East (opposite the Queen’s Pier) including the former 'Iron Pier Public House.'"

Developer, Dandara Contracting Ltd., hopes that the construction works will be completed before the end of 2005.

The first-time buyer apartments will be offered to persons on the Department’s Register. Any first-time buyers who are interested in finding out about the First-Time Buyers’ Register or details of other schemes of affordable housing being promoted by the Department should contact the Customer Service Team on 685955.
