Capybara Babies 24 August 2004

Almost a year to the day since their last litter, the Capybaras at the Curraghs Wildlife Park, Isle of Man, have had some new babies, first seen on the morning of Sunday 22nd August.

Park Manager, Mr Nick Pinder, commented:

"We're very pleased with these latest additions to our stock as we're trying to build up the numbers of these engaging and interesting animals. Last year's young will soon be moved to the tapir enclosure so it will provide some continuity and numbers in what is a very large enclosure."

Capybara young are, like guinea pigs, active from birth and soon following their mother, even swimming across the lake with her. The capybaras live in the Amazon enclosure at the Wildlife Park and their territory encompasses the squirrel monkey, tamarin and spider monkey islands, all of which they use from time to time as resting or feeding places. Visitors wishing to see the new family should therefore keep a good lookout when they visit this part of the Wildlife Park.

The Wildlife Park specialises in exhibiting wetland species and is adjacent to the Ballaugh Curraghs, the most important wetland conservation area on the Isle of Man.

The Wildlife Park is open every day from 10 am to 6 pm (5pm on Manx Grand Prix practice nights).
