Institute of Advanced Motorists 6 October 2004

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is currently supporting the formation of a new subgroup on the Isle of Man.

There are around 130 IAM Members on the Island but the previous local group became inactive several years ago. A new group has been initiated, with support from the Blackpool and Fylde Advanced Motorists (BAFAM). Several BAFAM delegates visited the Island for a weekend in May to meet local members and prospective members and associates and, since then, have been assisting with setting up a new Isle of Man Group.

Much work has been going on 'behind the scenes' over several months to form a committee and recruit the 'observers' and 'examiners' essential to establish a group on the Island which is able to train and assess drivers to meet the standards required to become members of the IAM. The training methods and membership standards are based on driving techniques developed by the Police Driver Training School.

The Isle of Man Group is now in a position to offer its first training programme for new members. A 'classroom' session will be held at the Civil Defence Headquarters, Woodbourne Road, Douglas at 7.30pm on Tuesday 12th October, followed by the first 'outing' for prospective new members with their assigned 'observers' (trainers) on Sunday 17th October, starting at 10.30am from the Manx Telecom car park at the Isle of Man Business Park, Cooil Road, Braddan.

The Minister for the Department of Transport, John Shimmin, MHK, will be present at this event on Sunday 17th, supporting an initiative which is one of the most important recommendations contained in his Department's recent consultative document on Road Safety.

Anyone with an interest in joining the Isle of Man Advanced Drivers will be made welcome and membership application forms will be available.
