School gets into top gear for TT 25 May 2007

PUPILS at Manor Park Primary School have been enjoying their own TT festival.

The whole school took part in a week of activities to celebrate the centenary of the world-famous races.

‘Children right from Nursery to Year 6 were involved in learning about some aspect of this historic occasion,’ said head teacher Sue Mowle. ‘Nursery children enjoyed hearing about the emergency services and having visitors from the police, fire service and ambulance service. A mini TT course, complete with grandstand and pit lane was created for role play and was enjoyed by children in Reception. There was even a bikers’ café, offering a range of food and drink at very reasonable prices.’

Children in Years 1 and 2 assumed the identity of a TT racer for the week and sent postcards back home describing their experiences on the Isle of Man, Mrs Mowle added.

Lower Key Stage 2 children designed TT colour wheels, celebratory TT races and TT board games. Upper Key Stage children used the TT in numeracy lessons, working out decimal places (lap times) and distance.

‘Year 6 have been using numeracy, geography and local history to create topographical mosaics of the Isle of Man,’ said the head. ‘We also used TT bikes to show what we know about forces and materials.’

Even art lessons took up the TT theme. Pupils enjoyed a trip around most of the TT course.

‘Emergency road closures on the Mountain resulted in us having to miss that section out but we were able to have a school photograph taken at the Grandstand,’ said Mrs Mowle.
‘We are very grateful to the TT riders who came to talk to the children and demonstrate their machines, Milky Quayle, Steve McGann, Steve Harper and members of the Martin Bullock Racing Team. Some children were allowed to write messages and sign the faring of Steve Harper's bike, which means they will probably have the fasting-moving signature on the Isle of Man!’
