Homes advised to register early for TT 23 January 2008

The Department of Tourism and Leisure is seeking additional homes to provide homestay accommodation for the TT Festival, 24 May – 7 June. The scheme is operated to cater for the overflow of tourists for the TT Festival and anyone interested in opening up their homes to visitors is advised to register their property early.

The Department is expecting a large number of visitors again this year following the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company’s recent announcement that they are well ahead with bookings compared to the same month in 2005 for TT2006. The Company has also announced that people can now book well in advance for their ferry tickets and there will be 233 sailings over the period and 115 extra sailings compared to normal schedules.

Tourism and Leisure Minister Adrian Earnshaw said:

‘The highly successful Homestay programme has now been operating for 17 years and our aim is to reach the same target as last year when 1521 homes participated in the scheme I know some wonderful friendships have developed through families welcoming visitors in to their homes and, of course, this is also a good opportunity for families to earn some extra money.’

Among Homestay host families are Frances and Harley Shimmin from Crosby who have been participating in the scheme for five years now.

‘It's a good experience and I would highly recommend it,’ Harley said. ‘To date we have hosted people from England, France, Southern Ireland, Switzerland and Germany and have enjoyed the experience very much. We feel we benefit just as much as our guests do and welcome the opportunity to share our home and culture with them.’

Homestay can be offered during TT for any number of nights between 24 May and 7 June with newly registering homes undergoing a compulsory, though simple, inspection by Department officers prior to being accepted on the scheme to ensure visitors enjoy a satisfactory standard of accommodation.

People wishing to find out more about Homestay can email Pippa Gilbert on or telephone her on 686802. Alternatively visit the Isle of Man Department of Tourism and Leisure website for more information on how to register for TT Homestay.
