Main Road, Glen Vine - Glen Lough Dip 29 March 2012

Work is due to start on the 2nd April at the Glen Lough Dip to strengthen the embankment and re-construct a small section of subsidence in the road. Despite works being carried out on the road surface at this location over recent years, cracks keep re-appearing. It has been identified that there is an underlying problem with the embankment which supports the road and this work will strengthen the embankment and will also replace the failed section of the road to address these problems. The work includes the removal of the trees from alongside the road, the erection of a precast concrete retaining wall, and then filling in behind the wall and finally the road itself will be re-constructed.

In order to complete the work and protect the workforce, it will be necessary to occupy half the road width. Traffic will be able to use the remaining lane in both directions which will be controlled using temporary traffic lights. Initially these lights will be in operation during working hours, but will then be extended to operate overnight as well, once excavations start in the carriageway. In order to complete the re-surfacing there will need to be full road closures and details of these and diversion routes will be advised nearer the time. This final element of the work will be carried out in the evening, after the rush hour, in order to minimise disruption. The carriageway works are due to start at the beginning of April, before the Easter Bank Holidays, and completion is due in early May. Work will be completed well before the TT. The Department apologises for any inconvenience caused.
