Senior Race Today 9 June 2006

The curtain comes down today on the 2006 TT meeting in the Isle of Man after a fortnight of brilliant sunshine, high speeds and record-breaking laps. Racing concludes with the six-lap 226 miles Senior TT to be followed by the Lap of Honour Classic Parade.

John McGuinness will be looking to round off a highly successful week by adding the Senior TT Trophy to those of the Superbike and Supersport Junior TTs which he won earlier in the week. If he does take the top spot on the podium it would be his 11th TT victory, moving him ahead of Giacomo Agostini and up to level third on the all-time list.

Having won the Senior last year McGuinness will probably start as favourite once more but one of those out to stop him notching up another victory will be Bruce Anstey who took his own TT titles to five by winning Monday’s Superstock event. Other contenders will include the in-form Ian Hutchinson, Guy Martin, Ian Lougher, Jason Griffiths, Martin Finnegan, Adrian Archibald and Cameron Donald.

After that it’s time to bring on the Classic bikes when around 130 machines – some of them over 70 years old – will do a lap of the TT Course. When the last rider gets back to the Grandstand it will signal the end of the 99th year of the Isle of Man TT and preparations will get underway for next year’s centenary.

Said Tourism Minister David Cretney, chairman of the TT Co-ordinating Committee:

"We have had a fabulous week of racing and the Isle of Man looks forward to welcoming visitors from all over the world – in even greater numbers – next year to celebrate with us the 100th anniversary of the TT."
