New high-tech engineering company opens at Jurby 16 November 2005

The Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) announce the opening of a new high-tech engineering company at Jurby airfield. Bapco Closures Ltd (Bapco) have agreed terms to lease a large unit owned by the DTI to further develop and commence manufacture of a range of closure products used in the food, industrial and motor industries.

The Company’s trademark BAP® is derived from the words Bonded, Aluminium and Plastic. BAP® closures are typically one or two piece pre-assembled injection moulded closures that include a foil membrane. After the product is put into the bottle, jar or can, the closure is clipped or screwed into position and the closure is welded to the container using an induction welding process.

The integral design features of BAP® closures enable them to be used under many demanding filling conditions, including Hot-fill, Aseptic, Pasteurised and Sterilised-processes. A growing world wide portfolio of over 150 patents and related applications cover the unique BAP® closure technology.

BAP® closures are available in a variety of materials; these different materials allow them to be used on different bottle types as well as other containers such as tin cans or gable top cartons.

Winston Smith, production director at Bapco said “our expertise in the implementation and roll-out of this technology in a high-speed commercial production environment is quite literally second to none. We already have manufacturing facilities worldwide and have chosen the Isle of Man to help meet the potential demand for our products in the European marketplace. We are very pleased with the welcome we have received on the Island so far and sincerely hope we can build this into a long term relationship here.”

The site at Jurby will manufacture injection moulded components on brand new state of the art equipment. Commenting on the development Hon Alex Downie MLC said “I am delighted that this company has decided to establish a presence at Jurby. My Department has been in negotiation with Bapco for some time and it is pleasing to see such a positive outcome. There is clearly a great deal of potential in this enterprise for employment opportunities and income generation and I look forward to future developments.”
