Inspection of Manx Family Services 8 November 2005

The Department of Health and Social Security has commissioned the Bordesley Institute to undertake a review of Manx Family Services. Manx Family Services are currently contracted to the Department to provide a range of services for Children and Young People. The review process will commence in November and is due to report to the Minister and the Department in March 2006.

Steve Rodan, MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security said, “In the light of concerns raised during Part One of the Commission of Inquiry into the Care of Young People, it is necessary that the Department reassures itself that Manx Family Services are delivering a high quality care to the Children and Young People placed with them. This will be a comprehensive, expert and independent review that will give an accurate picture of the care being delivered and identify areas of strength as well as indicating any areas that need improvement and give the Department the most up to date information to enable it to continually improve Child Care Services.”

During the course of Part one of the Inquiry, evidence came to light that called into question some of the practices of staff employed by Manx Family Services. The Department has decided that there is a need to undertake a full review of their services in order to ensure that the needs of Children and Young People are being appropriately and fully met. It is also to reassure the public that the Department is carrying out its statutory responsibilities and discharging its duty of care to children and young people as fully as possible.

Bordesley Institute are a highly regarded English based body who have expertise and experience in assessing the quality of residential care and care establishments. They previously undertook an audit of Manx Family Services on behalf of the Department in February 2002 and so have particular knowledge of Manx Family Services and of the Island and its services.
