Retirement of Dr. John Robertson, Isle of Man Government Analyst 8 November 2005

Dr. John W. Robertson, B.Pharm, Ph.D., M.Chem.A., C.Chem., F.R.S.C., retires from his position as the Island’s Government Analyst at the end of this week. It is a position he has held since December 1987 when he came to the Island from Durham County Council.

As Government Analyst, Dr. Roberson has had overall responsibility for delivering high-quality scientific services to Government Departments and the Commercial Sector, and for the provision of scientific advice to Members of Tynwald. He has also held the title of Public Analyst which is a statutory position under several statues. Amongst the responsibilities Dr. John (as he is commonly referred to) has shouldered are food safety issues, the quality of drinking water, environmental sampling, river water quality sampling and the analysis of agricultural materials. In addition to chemistry, microbiology and freshwater biology, the Government Laboratory is also responsible for monitoring work in relation to radiation on behalf of Isle of Man Government with particular regard to Sellafield.

Chief Executive of the Department, Antony Hamilton, said,

“Dr. John has been in post for almost 18 years and has provided a highly professional service for the people of this Island. He is a quiet man who has little time for bureaucracy and has always adopted a very practical and down-to-earth approach to his work. He is well-respected by all of his colleagues and by everyone with whom he has come into contact in his work. He has been instrumental in seeing the Government Laboratory achieve Quality Accreditation and in being awarded the Investors in People standard. I shall miss him as a dedicated, hard-working colleague but wish him and his wife, Bronwyn, a long and happy retirement”.
