Department announces receipt of the report of the Public Inquiry into the Strategic Plan 7 November 2005

The Department of Local Government and the Environment has announced that it has now received the independent Inspector’s Report following the Public Inquiry he conducted into the draft all-Island Strategic Plan. That Inquiry was held in the Villa Marina at the end of March 2005.

The Report is available for inspection at the Department’s main Reception on the second floor of Murray House, Mount Havelock, Douglas; at the Tynwald Library on the third floor of Government Office; and on the Department’s website at www.gov.im/dlge. Copies may also be purchased from Murray House or the Tynwald Library.

The Inspector’s report recommends approval of most of the Department’s proposed policies, but is critical of the lack of evidence to support the proposed Spatial Strategy. It recommends that, before the location of future residential and employment development can be finalised, there should be further survey work undertaken, including an assessment of the traffic implications.

The Department will now consider the report, and, if it is minded to adopt the Plan, it will publish a Notice giving details of the modifications it proposes to make to the previously published draft. These will include those already proposed by the Department at the Inquiry and any others resulting from the Inspector’s report.

The Minister for Local Government and the Environment, John Rimington, MHK, stated,

“I am pleased to learn that the Report has now been delivered to the Department. It represents a further stage in the production of the Island’s long-awaited Strategic Plan, and I intend that the Department should consider the Report’s recommendations as soon as possible. However, I don’t believe I should comment further on the Report until I and my fellow Members of the Department have had a proper opportunity to study its contents and decide on the best way forward”.
