Coins Found and Handed in to the Care of Manx National Heritage 3 November 2005

A small collection of silver coins of Tudor date have been found by a metal detectorist on the Island and handed in to the care of Manx National Heritage.

The law requires any such finds to be reported promptly to Manx National Heritage, who inform the High Bailiff who decides whether a Treasure Trove inquest may be held. Treasure Trove is an ancient law which allows the British Crown to claim an item of value whose owner cannot be traced. In relation to Treasure Trove, the Manx Government, through the agency of MNH, takes the place of the Crown on the Isle of Man.

Allison Fox, Curator of Archaeology for Manx National Heritage, said:

“This is a small find of silver coins. The discovery is interesting and some conservation work and research will be done on the coins, but in the meantime we will be relaying all the information that we currently have to the High Bailiff, in order to help him make his judgement of whether or not this find is Treasure Trove.

As is our standard practice, we won’t be releasing any further information about the precise location at which the find was made, to avoid any inconvenience to the landowner.”

    Allison concluded :

“Manx National Heritage would like to acknowledge the Finder’s actions in reporting this find promptly and the landowner’s co-operation with us. We must emphasise, however, that we are not in a position to release any further details until the matter has been fully dealt with by Coroner’s inquest”.
