Trees to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar 26 October 2005

As part of the Sea Isle of Man celebrations, and also to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, a number of oak trees are to be planted in Foxdale on ‘Corris’s field’, adjacent to Stoney mountain, at 11.00am on Monday 31 October.

The oak tree symbolises the ‘Man of War’ ship in the age of sail when all the nations’ ships were built primarily of oak resulting in the forests of England, and the rest of Europe, being felled to build large fleets. Similar plantings have been taking place throughout the British Isles but this planting is to commemorate the Manxmen who took part in the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805. Some 67 Manxmen fought in a number of ‘Man of War’ ships, along with HMS Victory, and the most famous Manxman, of course, being Captain Quilliam.

Martyn Quayle MHK, Chairman of the Sea Isle of Man Committee, said: ‘It is both pleasing and moving that the Isle of Man is commemorating its sea faring traditions this year and, most of all, remembering the Battle of Trafalgar, Captain Quilliam and all the Manxmen who were involved. We can justifiably be proud of our maritime heritage.’

Pupils from four schools, Arbory, Ballasalla, Foxdale and Marown, will be present at the ceremony and each child will plant an oak tree under the supervision of the Isle of Man Forestry Division.

Martyn Quayle MHK, Captain Andrew Douglas MHK and Phil Gawne MHK, Minister for D.A.F.F. will be present to unveil a plaque to commemorate the occasion.
