Entries already received for 2006 September Bowls Festival 17 October 2005

Entries have already been received for the Isle of Man’s 2006 September Bowling Festival – only a month after the last event, and even before official entry forms have been printed!

The distinction of being the first bowlers to put their names down for next year’s festival goes to two married couples from Staffordshire who enjoyed the competition so much that they sent in their entries shortly after leaving the Island – using a form on the back of the 2005 programme. The official forms will be available shortly.

Said Tourism Minister David Cretney: ‘This shows the popularity of our bowling festivals as these visitors were obviously determined not to miss out next year. The game has an atmosphere all of its own and I know many people come to the Island for the friendships that are made as much as the competition.

‘This year’s September Festival was particularly successful with the 448 competitors in the men’s section representing the biggest entry for 13 years. We hope to build on this even further in the years to come.’

The 2005 event featured some of the closest bowling in the history of the competition with the men’s and women’s finals both being won by a score of 21-20. Stockport bowler Gareth Gwilliam pocketed the £3,000 first prize and also triumphed in the main supporting event, the Tourism Competition. Ladies’ winner was Joyce Jones from Rochdale who received a cheque for £1,000.
