Anne Fine launches Freedom Fighters Campaign in Schools 28 September 2005

Congratulations to Margaret Rattigan, Lyz Moore and everyone else involved for the recent launch of the “Freedom Fighters” campaign - the new programme which delivers tobacco education through literacy. The programme, which is a joint initiative between the DHSS and DoE, is based on "Fight the Good Fight" - a short story by Anne Fine - well known children's author. The original idea of using this story for the campaign came from Margaret, having read the story to her own children as youngsters and so an offer was extended to Anne to come over to the Island to launch the campaign. Whilst Anne admitted she was intrigued with the concept, she was obviously delighted with the outcome.

During her visit she was welcomed at both Anagh Coar and Laxey schools, and was also the first 'VIP' to visit the newly refurbished Family Library at Noble’s Hall. At all these venues she had the opportunity to meet Year 5 and 6 children and was happy to answer their questions about her home life, her writing and her school days. Her one tenuous link to the Island was that her grandfather had ridden in the TT Races, but apart from that she had no knowledge of the Island. Anne was also impressed by the standards around the schools and the children's obvious eagerness to learn - something which she felt wasn't quite so noticeable in UK schools she had visited.

Hopefully this will be the start something new for the Department and the Island as a whole – and, who knows? Anne Fine's next story could be about the Isle of Man.
