Last trams of 2005 at 2005hours before winter closure 12 September 2005

The Manx Electric Railway and the Snaefell Mountain Railway will end their Summer operating season on Sunday October 2 this year.

To enable passengers to enjoy an end of season ride on the Manx Electric Railway, additional trams will operate on the final day (Oct 2) during the daytime together with additional last departures from Ramsey and Douglas Derby Castle at 1850 hours to arrive at each end of the line at 2005 hours, the same time as the year date.

Tourism Minister David Cretney said: ‘During the closure of the MER it is anticipated that the demolition of Summerland will be completed. Also, subject to the approval of Tynwald at its October sitting, a £1.5million track renewal contact will be undertaken on the MER by a specialist railway engineering contractor from the UK. The opportunity will also be taken to re-paint a number of the overhead poles on the railway whilst the electricity supply is isolated.

‘The Department of Transport will also take the opportunity to carry out highway improvement works at Laxey during the winter including renewal of the railway tracks at the Mines Tavern level crossing.’

David Howard, Director of Public Transport, said: ‘The Department’s continuing investment in the Island’s railways demonstrates our commitment to them for the future and I hope passengers will take advantage to have a last journey for this year before this extensive engineering work is undertaken during the closure period.’

Meanwhile, the Isle of Man Steam Railway will operate daily services between Douglas and Port Erin until October 30.

All the railways will re-open next summer.
