Food Safety Poster Competition Prize Presentation 6 September 2005

Following on from the success of this years National Food Safety Week, the Department of Local Government and the Environment’s, Food Safety Unit, have presented school pupils with prizes, acknowledging their success in this years ‘National Food Safety Poster Competition’.

The competition is organised by foodlink, a part of the United Kingdom Food and Drink Federation, and the theme of this year’s competition was “Stop – Think – Wash!”, raising awareness of how easily hands can spread germs.

School Pupils from across the Island were invited to submit posters illustrating the hand washing theme and two posters were then selected to represent the Island in the National Competition.

A poster produced by Charlie Burton of Willaston Primary School was awarded a ‘Certificate of Commendation’ and a poster produced by the Children of Elmer’s Room, Special Unit at Scoill Phurt Le Moirrey was awarded a ‘Certificate of Excellence’.

The Poster produced by the Children of Elmer’s Room is currently displayed on the foodlink website (www.foodlink.org.uk) and will also be used as a part of the foodlink 2006 calendar.

The Food Standards Agency estimate that as many as 5.5 million people may suffer from food-poisoning every year and raising awareness of how important hand washing is, in preventing food poisoning, is very important.
