Watch Out Children About! 2 September 2005

6 September sees the start of the new school year. Motorists are asked to look out for young pedestrians and cyclists on their way to and from school. Please drive slowly near schools as young children have difficulty judging the speed and distance of approaching vehicles.

Many of the Island schools have a 20mph speed limit in force at the beginning and end of the school day. These are indicated by flashing electronic signs. However motorists are advised to drive slowly past all schools, stop for the school crossing patrols, be alert at all times and watch out for children. When dropping off and picking up children park away from the zig zag lines as this can block visibility and affect the safety of other road users.

Road Safety Manager, Dawn Henley said:

” Many children are taken to school by car. Research carried out by the Department shows that on the Island school traffic accounts for 13.3% of morning peak traffic.
Please take care on routes to and around schools. Look out for the School Crossing Patrols. They are back on duty after the summer break providing safer crossing points for our children on their journey to school.”

Unfortunately the School Crossing Patrol Service is still experiencing difficulties with recruitment. If you are interested in becoming a patrol please contact the Road Safety Unit. Telephone: 686671.
