Landfill Staff make another Heritage find 25 August 2005

The Department of Local Government and the Environment’s staff at the Point of Ayre Landfill Site have recently been successful in supporting the Island’s heritage.

The landfill site manager, John Powell, rescued two unique Douglas Football Club caps from a load of waste deposited at the site and handed them over to the Social History Section of Manx National Heritage. MNH were pleased to receive them into their collection as the period the caps dated from is quite old and under represented for this type of item in the Social History collection at the Museum in Douglas.

This is the latest in a growing number of artifacts and items recovered from the waste deposited by the Island’s residents at the Civic Amenity site and Landfill that have a historic value and the staff of the Department are continually vigilant to rescue items that might otherwise be lost forever.

A letter received from the Curator of the Social History Section thanks the staff for the rescue and donation of the Caps to the Museum and confirms that they have now been accessioned as part of the permanent collection.

The Department’s Waste Operations Management Unit would ask residents to consider if items they intend throwing away might possibly have a Heritage Value for the MNH before discarding them, as the landfill site will be closing at the end of the year. After that, the chances of the items then being recovered by this route for the Museum will be lost.
