Old Abattoir To Be Closed For Essential Maintenance 17 August 2005

The Department of Local Government and the Environment has had to close the former abattoir at Tromode for essential maintenance. It is expected that the plant might be out of action for about six weeks, though every effort will be made to have it operational again as quickly as possible.

The former abattoir, which was built in the late 1960s was closed following the opening of the new meat plant. It is owned by the Department and was brought back into service in connection with the BSE crisis in 1996. As a precaution, animals over thirty months old were taken for slaughter to the former abattoir because they were not considered suitable for the food chain.

Whilst the throughput at the former abattoir has been reducing, the temporary closure will inevitably lead to a backlog but the staff at the plant have indicated that they will do their best to reduce the same as quickly as possible after it reopens.

Chief Executive of the Department, Antony Hamilton, said

“As is to be expected, the former abattoir is showing signs of its age. The summer is the best time to have this essential work carried out as part of the planned maintenance programme in order to keep it operational to deal with the aftermath of BSE. The Department would like to apologise for any inconvenience the temporary closure will cause.”
