Summer Drink Drive Campaign – 19th to 31st July 2005 19 July 2005

In the summertime when the weather is fine….don’t drink and drive.

The Department of Transport and the Police launch the summer drink drive awareness campaign.

With a frequency of sunny days and light nights; barbeques and drinks after work; we are asking drivers to think about what they drink before they drive home. It is difficult to calculate the alcohol units you have drank and the effect they will have on your system.

There are too many factors to consider in working out the effects of even a small amount of alcohol in your system accurately. These include size of person, your metabolism; the amount of food you have eaten, the type of alcohol drank and when it was consumed, whether you are male or female. Therefore it is unlikely that you will be able to accurately assess if you are under the limit, and so legally able to drive a vehicle.

Michelle Flanagan, Assistant Road Safety Officer said,

“The only safe option is not to drink if you plan to drive. Any amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive safely as your reaction times are impaired and you’re unable to judge speed and distance accurately.”

Sgt Martin Birchenough of the road policing unit said,

“If you are attending a function at this time of year nominate someone to be a designated driver who will not drink alcohol on that occasion. All drivers involved in an accident are likely to be breathalysed. Do not drink and drive.”

Reduce the risks, and remember don’t drink and drive.

You are cordially invited to attend the press launch on Tuesday 19th July 2005 at the Horse and Plough Restaurant, Ballacottier Business Park, Braddan, at 10.30 a.m.
