DOE Works Division retain recognition as an Investor in People 29 December 2005

    WELL DONE to all the staff at the Department of Education Works Division in retaining recognition as an Investor in People. The Works Division received a detailed follow up report from the Assessor, which was full of supportive comments.

    • The organisation demonstrates a strong purpose and vision that is clearly defined. Effective strategies for continually improving performance are also described
    • Strong planning processes are in place. The annual Development Plan clearly identifies the aims and objectives of the organisation and the contribution that they make to the aims and objectives of the Department of Education. These then lead to the identification of staff action plans. These are clearly defined, and contain specific actions with time scales, success criteria and monitoring strategies. Appropriate communication processes are used effectively and as a result people have a clear and accurate understanding of the objectives of the Division and their contribution to its success.
    • Good links are in place to integrate learning and development activities with the targets of staff action plans. This enables the organisation to evaluate their investment in people in terms of its impact on organisational performance
    • A wide range of learning and development activities are planned and coordinated by the Office Manager, all of which can be clearly linked to the priorities of the organisation, and suppord the achievement of its objectives. Learning and development courses are supplemented by on the job learning and development. Line managers are active in promoting learning and development opportunities to their staff
    • There is evidence of strong team working throughout the organisation. Workforce teams are managed efficiently by foremen. Effective informal communication and encouragement is evident, and the comments of interviewees confirmed that they receive a wide range of training, have pride in their work and clearly understand the contribution that they make to the success of the organisation.
    • . Good informal methods are used to acknowledge and recognise the value of peoples’ contribution to the achievement of the organisation’s aims and objectives
    Jean Horton spoke of her delight in accepting the award on behalf of the Works Division. She commented on the great team spirit and thanked everyone for their hard work, friendship and humour which makes the Works Division a great place to be. “In the future the Works Division will look to develop the IIP Leadership model for further accreditation.”
