Review of the scope and structure of the Government 13 January 2006

A DEDICATED website has been launched for the Review of the Scope and Structure of the Isle of Man Government, currently being undertaken by an independent Review Team.

The website, at provides background information on the project and offers members of the public the opportunity to submit their views.

The review is being conducted under the auspices of the Governance Committee of the Council of Ministers, which is chaired by Chief Minister Donald Gelling MLC.

The purpose of the exercise is to ensure that the organisational structure and scope of Government supports the provision of public services that are value for money, good quality, and accountable.

Chairman of the Review Team Robert Quayle explained: ‘We have already sought views from Members of Tynwald, Government officers, local authorities, business organisations and unions. The website will help to reach out to the wider public, who are welcome to submit their opinions on the future scope and structure of the Isle of Man Government.’

The review has been prompted by a number of organisational issues that have arisen in recent years (explained more fully in the terms of reference on the website) and comes nearly 20 years after the introduction of the Ministerial system in 1987.

Said Mr Quayle: ‘The job of the Review Team is to carry out a comprehensive review looking independently and objectively at a wide range of options. Our brief is to produce a report for the Council of Ministers by the summer of this year. The final decisions on the way forward will, of course, be a matter for the Council of Ministers and Tynwald in due course.’
