DAFF encourages school parties to visit Knockaloe demonstration farm 23 February 2006

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is committed to helping raise the profile of farming in the eyes of school children, with an ambitious project to re-open Knockaloe demonstration farm to school parties.

The Minister, Phil Gawne MHK, commented, "We have worked very carefully on health and safety issues to ensure that we can offer schools a safe visit which will allow the Island's children to see at first hand how their food is reared."

"I believe that this is an important step in helping to promote the fantastic food which is produced on the Island. The Department will be proactively approaching schools to offer them a chance to visit," he continued.

Knockaloe has had an interesting history, having been an internment camp during the First World War. Photographs available from this period allow these school visits to cover many areas of the school curriculum, alongside the more obvious aspects of modern and traditional food and farming.

Mr Gawne commented, "Officers will be working carefully with teachers to ensure the visits address several areas of the curriculum, ensuring that there are real educational benefits, as well as profiling the Island's excellent farming."
