Island in Bloom competition is launched 1 March 2006

The Department of Tourism and Leisure is pleased to announce the launch of the Island in Bloom 2006 competition.

Douglas Promenade looking blooming lovely !The ‘Island in Bloom’ competition, under the auspices of the Royal Horticultural Society, aims to encourage communities to make long term improvements to their local environment and improve the appearance of towns and villages. Each year all local authorities on the Isle of Man are invited to participate in the ‘Island in Bloom’ competition, which is co-ordinated by the Department of Tourism and Leisure, and the overall winner goes forward to represent the Island in the ‘Britain in Bloom’ finals. Last year Douglas was the overall winner of the competition and will represent the Island in the ‘Britain in Bloom’ finals this year.

There are 10 categories to choose from including large/small hotel, pub/restaurant/café, public parks/gardens, shopping/public area, business premises, individual householder’s small/large garden and best community project. This year it has been decided to include a ‘post office’ category to promote excellence amongst these community based businesses.

All those local authorities who enter are eligible to receive a £50 grant towards administration costs.

Tourism and Leisure Minister, Hon David Cretney MHK said:

‘I hope the local authorities around the Island will support the Island in Bloom competition as enthusiastically as in previous years because it results in people coming together to improve their neighbourhoods and strengthen local communities.
‘This year we’re keeping our fingers crossed for Douglas and I wish the town every success in the competition.’

Any local authority which has not received details of the competition can contact the Island in Bloom co-ordinator Anna Hemy for information – telephone 686733.
