Buying a Used Car - new advice from the Isle of Man Office of Fair Trading 21 March 2006

The spring is a favourite time of year to consider buying a new or second hand car. Buying and then maintaining a car however is probably one of the biggest expenses we face. It's a complicated business with plenty of potential for problems. So it makes sense to know your rights, the pitfalls and what to do if things go wrong.

The Isle of Man Office of Fair Trading has launched a new leaflet "Buying a Used Car" which provides advice to anyone looking to buy.

The leaflet covers your rights when buying through a dealer, at auction and from a private seller and includes a list of checks you can make to help you decide whether the car is worth buying.

Chairman of the Office of Fair Trading, Quintin Gill MHK, said "Myself and the other members of the Board are very keen to ensure that consumers understand their rights and responsibilities when buying goods. We particularly wished to ensure that young people had the information they needed when making choices about buying their first car. We hope that consumers will find the leaflet provides valuable assistance but if anyone has any concerns about the process of buying a car they should contact our Advisers on 686500".

Copies of the leaflet can be obtained from the Office in Lord Street, Douglas, telephone 686500. They can also be found on the Office of Fair Trading website
