Castle Conservation by Professional Rope Access Team 30 March 2006

High level maintenance work by a professional rope access team trained in masonry conservation started on Sunday 26th March at Peel Castle and Castle Rushen.

Conservation Solutions have worked extensively on ancient monuments for Manx National Heritage’s counterparts in the UK and their unique combination of skills allows them to carry out essential but highly sensitive maintenance to high level masonry where erection of scaffolding or the use of hydraulic platforms is not practicable. Steve Blackford, Head of Properties Management said:

“When people think of work at MNH historic monuments and buildings they are likely to think of the large scale conservation projects we have undertaken at Castle Rushen, Peel Castle, and Rushen Abbey but we also invest a great deal of effort in carrying out timely routine maintenance of our properties. This is a typical example of a small maintenance job that can make a big difference and of the specialist skills required to ensure good stewardship of our heritage.”

The work of the team, which was undertaken over a three day period, has been focussed upon the removal of sapling trees and weeds with woody root structures that, if left unchecked, will over time penetrate into the core of the masonry and exert internal pressures that can cause stonework to fracture exposing the core to the risk of destabilisation by being washed out by rainwater.

Access to these areas is rare because of the difficulty of reaching them and this work also provides the opportunity for an expert to carry out a close-up assessment of the general condition of the monument at high levels, assisting Manx National Heritage’s Properties Management Division in their ongoing work to plan and prioritise their conservation and maintenance projects.

Peel Castle and Castle Rushen will open to visitors for the 2006 season on 8th April. They will remain open from 10am to 5pm daily, until the end of October.
