Isle of Woman weekend is launched 25 May 2006

Isle of Woman weekend is launchedTourism and Leisure member Hon Pamela Crowe MLC has today revealed plans to change the Isle of Man to Isle of Woman for the weekend 27-29 October.

Mrs Crowe said:

‘The lovely idea of staging an Isle of Woman weekend derives from when originally during February 2005 Yorkie first approached the Isle of Man Department of Tourism and Leisure to publicise their new woman-friendly, pink-wrapped chocolate bar, and suggested changing the name of the Island would be a great way to obtain publicity as a tourism destination. The two day campaign gained a huge amount of media interest and amounted to a whopping £400,000 of coverage.’

The objective of the weekend is to extend the season, link in with the Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity, and put on events relating to Isle of Woman weekend that will attract both visitors to the Island and residents. There will be a wide selection of events on offer and some of the highlights will be a Chocoholics delight evening, sponsored by Davisons’ Chocolates, a ladies’ rugby tournament, a pink champagne beauty afternoon with samples of spa treatments, a cabaret night at the Villa Marina, a sporting and dining club dinner, and a pink charity walk in aid of Breakthrough Cancer to tie in with national breast cancer awareness month.

Isle of Woman events co-ordinator Carole Male said:

‘I’m delighted how enthusiastically most of the people and businesses I’ve already approached have welcomed the idea of Isle of Woman weekend. The committee consists of representatives from three hotels the Hilton, Claremont and Castle Mona, Euromanx, Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, Travel Services (IOM) Ltd, Isle of Man Newspapers Ltd and Department of Tourism and Leisure. We’re all looking forward to taking part in the organisation of this exciting event and between us we promise to bring to the Isle of Woman a weekend of fun-filled, action-packed events.’
