New Chief Executive for the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry 12 June 2006

The Civil Service Commission and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry are pleased to announce that Colin Kniveton has been appointed as the new Chief Executive of the Department. Colin will come to the Department from his post as Financial Controller at The Treasury.

Colin Kniveton Speaking about his appointment, Colin said, “I know, through my recent dealings with agriculture and fisheries, that there are many challenges facing the farming and fishing communities at this time.

“I am very much looking forward to joining the team at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and to having an opportunity to assist in meeting these challenges, for the benefit of the Island as a whole.”

Colin, a Chartered Management Accountant, joined the Civil Service in June 1998 as Director of Finance at the IOM Water Authority, after spending the previous decade in the offshore finance industry.

During his time at the Drill Hall, he devised the financial strategy to fund the Authority’s “20-Year Strategic Business Plan”. In addition to bringing modern management accounting expertise, he also pioneered the use of purchase cards in Government.

In August 2001, he moved to the Treasury, firstly as Assistant Financial Controller before becoming Financial Controller the following year. This resulted in his involvement in a diverse range of issues, including those involving agriculture and fisheries.

Away from the office, Colin is involved in a number of sports. He is Chairman of the IOM Cricket Association, and is one of the Island’s senior hockey umpires.

Colin and his wife, Barbara, have three sons, Kevin (19), Ricky (18) and Danny (16). Barbara is from a farming family, the Qualtroughs of Port St. Mary. Colin also has farming connections.

“My grandfather used to farm Bibaloe Beg, outside Onchan,” he said.

Colin will be taking up the post of Chief Executive on 10th July.
