National Food Safety Week - 12th-18th June 2006 13 June 2006

The Department of Local Government and the Environment, is taking part in the 14th Foodlink National Food Safety Week, and its Food Safety Unit will be promoting good food hygiene and food safety, by way of demonstrations at local supermarkets.

Representatives from the Department will be present at Shoprite, Victoria Road, Douglas and Tesco, Lake Road Douglas on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th June respectively. As well as issuing guidance and leaflets in relation to food safety, there will be a large selection of free balloons, badges and quiz sheets for children to enjoy. The demonstrations will give local people an opportunity to meet Environmental Health Officers and pose any questions that they may have about food safety matters.

The theme for this year’s National Food Safety Week is on raising awareness of the 4 Cs for Food Safety: Cleanliness, Cooking, Chilling and Cross-contamination.

• Cleanliness: Keep your kitchen, equipment and work surfaces clean

• Cooking: Make sure food is properly cooked before eating

• Chilling: Keep perishable foods cold until you cook or eat them

• Cross-contamination: Don’t let harmful germs spread around your kitchen

Melanie Leech, Director General of the Food and Drink Federation, which organises the foodlink National Food Safety Week, said:

“National Food Safety Week aims to highlight simple, everyday actions that can lead to – and prevent - food poisoning. We’ve seen in previous years that the message about washing hands is hitting home, but with many thousands of cases of food poisoning each year, there is still much to be done. This year, we will continue to work hard with national and local partners to raise awareness of the importance of the 4Cs for food safety – cleanliness, cooking, chilling and cross-contamination – to help people across Britain continue to enjoy their food and remain food poisoning free.”
