Musical Events for the Summer Term 2006 15 June 2006

This time of year is extremely busy for the Department of Education's Music Service with numerous events taking place and included in these are:

"Children in Song"

This event is promoted by the Douglas Buxton Trust* and combines a week of school visits by a leading choir trainer, culminating in a concert at the Villa Marina. It proved very successful when the plan was first conceived in 2004, and on that occasion the training was provided by Sue Hollingworth, who is one of the UK's leading experts, working with children's choirs.

This year the event will be led by Maggie Richardson, Head of Expressive Arts at Castle Rushen High School, and also chair of "Sing for Pleasure", an organisation in the UK which promotes high quality choirs and choir trainers, through its publications and courses.

The eight schools taking part in the concert will be: Castle Rushen High School, Ashley Hill, Braddan, St Thomas', Rushen, Phurt le Moirrey, Victoria Road and Sulby. In addition, the Manx Children's Choir will be guests at the concert. This will be held on Saturday 1st July, as previously mentioned at the Villa Marina, starting at 7 pm. Tickets are available now from the Villa Box Office.

* The Douglas Buxton Trust was founded in 1976 to honour the achievements of the late Douglas Buxton, the founder of both the Lon Dhoo Male Voice Choir in 1937 and the Lon Vane Ladies Choir in 1946. In his younger years he was a music teacher at Douglas High School for Boys and latterly taught piano and singing from his home. The trust was formed to set up a library from which people could borrow music and this is housed in the Music Centre on Lord Street, Douglas.

BBC Philharmonic Orchestra Residency

Most music lovers will be aware of the two concerts to be performed by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in the Villa Marina next month, on 8th and 9th July. Prior to this, an advance party from the Orchestra will be visiting the island for a week of musical events around the Island. This has been organised through a three-way collaboration between the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra Education Department, the Isle of Man Arts Council and the Department of Education Music Service. Included in the week's events will be:

Monday 3rd July at 2.30 pm in St Ninians High School there will be a composition master class with Barry Russell. Senior pupils from Island secondary schools have been preparing music to be performed by a group of BBC Philharmonic Orchestra players and this will be a fabulous opportunity for the students to study with a master composer and then to have their work played by professional musicians.

Thursday 6th July The Manx Youth Orchestra, together with Barry Russell and the BBC Philharmonic group will give two school concerts - one in St Ninian's High School and another in Castle Rushen High School. Again, this is a rare opportunity for students to play alongside professionals of this calibre.

Manx Youth Orchestra Tour to Germany - Thursday 20th - Wednesday 26th July

The orchestra last toured in 2002. This year they will visit Germany, giving three concerts in halls in the Rhineland area of Koblenz and Cologne.
