Entries welcome for Tourism & Leisure Photo Competition 16 June 2006

ENTRIES are now being accepted for the annual Isle of Man Department of Tourism and Leisure Photo Competition.

Photographers have until midday on 30 June to lodge up to 12 entries in six categories. All photos must have been taken on the Island in the previous 12 months.

The Department hopes winning entries will help to promote the Isle of Man. There’s more than £4,000 available in prize money for the best images, and the closing date for receipt of entries is June 30. Entries must be high quality digital images or transparencies, and should have been taken during the past year (between July 2005 and June 2006).

Tourism and Leisure Minister David Cretney MHK said:

‘Holding a photography competition is a way for us to acquire some new photographs and hopefully get a new perspective on the Island. Last year we were spoilt for choice and many of the wining pictures have been used in our marketing campaign this year. I expect it will be extremely difficult to select the winners but I’m looking forward to seeing the entries.’

Mr Cretney will head the judging panel which will also include Miles Cowsill, managing director of the Guide publishers, Lily Publications.

The Department wants transparencies or very high quality digital images only and regrets it cannot accept prints.

Miles Cowsill explained:

‘Many photos are spread across two pages in the Guide, and a print does not provide a high enough quality image for us to reproduce to that size. That’s why we have to restrict the competition to transparencies or digital images of a minimum A4 size and 300dpi quality.’

The competition is open to amateur and professional photographers who can enter up to 12 images - two in each category. All entries must be received by the Department of Tourism and Leisure, at the Sea Terminal, Douglas, by midday on June 30 2006 for judging. An entry form and full rules are on the Department’s website - www.visitisleofman.com. Last year’s winning photos can also be seen on the website.

Photographers can enter one or two images in any or all of six categories covering various aspects of Island life, and the picture judged best overall will scoop £1,000. Six prizes of £500 can be awarded to the winners whose images, in the eyes of the judges, best represent the Isle of Man in each of six categories - Scenic landscapes, scenic coastal, heritage, transport, events of the Isle of Man and miscellaneous.
