Renowned Film Critic checks out Isle of Man Locations 11 July 2006

Britain’s best-known and most popular film critic, Barry Norman took time out during a recent Department of Education speaking engagement to visit some of the Island’s most popular film locations.

Isle of Man Film’s Development Manager Hilary Dugdale said, “Barry is a leading authority on films and actors spanning the past 100 years. We have met him on a number of occasions over the years but this is the first time that he has been able to visit us on our own turf. It was a thrill to be able to introduce him to a variety of locations used in some of our more prominent feature films. Barry was particularly taken with Castletown and Port Erin, two of the locations utilised in this summer’s blockbuster film “STORMBREAKER” which goes on general release on Friday 21st July.”

Also a very successful journalist and author, Barry Norman is probably best known for his BBC ‘Film’ series which he started in 1972 and presented for 26 years. The programme is currently fronted by Jonathan Ross. Barry also wrote and presented four acclaimed series on the Hollywood Greats and the British Greats which were essential television viewing for any self-respecting film buff in the seventies and eighties. Barry is a regular ‘film’ contributor to various publications and television and radio programmes and more recently has spent most of his time writing popular fiction as well as a number of definitive film books, including his memoirs “And Why Not?”

“I am deeply impressed by what Isle of Man Film has achieved in this challenging and fast-moving industry, in a comparatively short time”, said Barry. “Now, having seen some of the Islands fabulous locations and being more familiar with the business side of the Island’s involvement in the industry, I can see quite clearly why film production here is so prolific. The diversity of the landscape is incredible”.

STORMBREAKER will be showing at the Broadway Cinema for a season commencing on Friday 21st July 2006. It’s advisable to book your seats in advance by telephoning the Villa Marina Box Office on Douglas (01624) 694555. STORMBREAKER writer Anthony Horowitz will be signing copies of his books at Ottakar’s in Douglas on the 23rd July from 2pm. If you would like to know more about this event, please contact Alison at the store on (01624) 679051.
