Conservation Area Orders for Kirk Michael Village and Glen Wyllin 12 July 2006

The Department of Local Government and the Environment has announced that, following extensive local consultation, it has made Conservation Area Orders covering part of Kirk Michael Village and Glen Wyllin. The Order for the Village embraces most of the buildings alongside the main road, from the Old Vicarage in the north to the School in the south, and includes the land around White House Farm, Balleira Road and the Glen, and Station Road and the former station building. The Glen Wyllin Order covers not only the public glen down to the sea, but also the area south of the main road around the former water mill.

In the spring of this year, the Department hosted Open House Events, at which the local community expressed its views and the Department was able to explain the process and the implications of Conservation Area status. These events were well-attended and almost everybody was supportive of the Department’s proposals. These Orders represent the outcome of those meetings and will come into effect on the 1st of August 2006.

Copies of the maps and the Character Appraisals for each of the two areas are available from the Department’s Officers in Murray House.

Minister for Local Government and the Environment, John Rimington MHK, said,

“I welcome the opportunity for the Department to introduce measures which will both assist in preserving and enhancing more of the Island’s built heritage and the spaces around it, and also have such a strong element of local support. These are two important areas and the Orders establish their special status”.

Any queries about the Orders or about the grant assistance which is available for certain works to buildings within Conservation Areas should be directed to Steve Moore, the Department’s Conservation Officer, or Trevor Wilson, Assistant Conservation Officer, in Murray House.
