Interim Director of Social Services 21 July 2006

The Department of Health and Social Security has appointed an Interim Director of Social Services to provide cover for Mr David Cooke, who is currently absent from work due to health problems. Mr Peter Smallridge, CBE, will take up the position on 24 July 2006.

DHSS Chief Executive, David Killip, said

"I am very pleased that Peter Smallridge is able to work with Social Services Division. He has an impressive CV and is highly experienced in the areas that are of particular priority for Social Services currently. He will provide valuable leadership and input".

Mr Smallridge’s responsibilities will include acting as Interim Director of Social Services as well as conducting a review of the management processes and procedures relating to children’s services. He will produce an improvement plan directed at improving the management of children’s services in Social Services and establish monitoring arrangements to ensure identified actions aimed at improvements are achieved.

Mr Smallridge has extensive experience in Social Care at Director level and has been involved in the management of large organisations. He has also worked for 8 years as a Chair of a Health Authority and Primary Health Care Trust. He is currently Chair of the Kent & Medway NHS & Social Care Partnership Trust and runs his own consultancy firm.
