Department of Transport congratulates Long Service Relief Crossing Officer 25 July 2006

Relief Crossing School Patrol Officer Ken Parker has become the first person to have served at every school crossing site on the Island - covering over thirty different locations!

Mr Parker (74) is to retire next July, but has been a School Patrol Officer (SCP) for over twelve years. He lives in Ramsey and was a permanent SCP in the town for five years, prior to becoming a Relief SCP seven years ago. As a keen supporter of the Department’s road safety campaigns, he volunteered to help with Walk to School Week and answered the call for extra staff during TT fortnight.

Ken Parker comments,

“I really enjoy this job, the children are fantastic and I have never had a cross word with a pedestrian or driver during my twelve years service. Whilst I don’t have a favourite crossing I can honestly say that I have thoroughly enjoyed working with my other SCP colleagues and everyone at the Department. I will certainly miss them all when I retire next year.”

Gordon Edwards, Road Safety Manager at The Department of Transport comments

“School Crossing Patrol Officers provide an essential service. They are in fact the friendly face of road safety, teaching children how to cross the road safely from a very early age. We are extremely grateful to Mr Parker for his invaluable support and flexibility as a relief school crossing patrol officer. He has been a dedicated colleague and we think his achievement of serving at every school crossing is outstanding.”
