Heavyweights muscle in on the Isle of Man 18 August 2006

On Sunday August 27, the Isle of Man will witness the battle of the heavyweights as muscle bound men compete for the prestigious title of ‘Britain’s Strongest Man’.

The event sees 10 finalists take on a variety of challenges including pulling trucks, lifting vans, carrying colossal atlas stones and compete in a 125kg farmers walk.

The Isle of Man is proud to be hosting the event for the first time. Spectators are welcome to view the action on Douglas Promenade walkway opposite the Villa Marina Gardens between 11.00 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. Entrants will be competing for the coveted Britain’s Strongest Man 2006 title, which in previous years has been won by famous names including Geoff Capes.

David Cretney, Tourism Minister commented:

“The Isle of Man is already well known for its sport as we host a number of national and international events including the TT Races, Honda Powerboats and Rally Isle of Man. However, we have never held a strongman competition before and we are hoping that by bringing Britain’s Strongest Man to the island this year we can attract the World’s Strongest Man in the future.

The event has top commentator Paul Dickinson and referee Svend ‘The Viking’ Karlsen to adjudicate over this high-profile event which will be shown on Sky Sports.

Travel Services Ltd is offering packages to the island over the bank holiday weekend so you can be there to watch the action and find out who will be crowned ‘Britain’s Strongest Man 2006’.
