Environment Department Supports Marine Conservation and Marine Litter Awareness Day 8 September 2006

The Department of Local Government and the Environment will launch a “Fishing for Litter” initiative on Friday 15 September 2006. This scheme is designed to help fishermen collect waste from the sea and dispose of it properly. The scheme is supported by the Isle of Man Fishermen’s Association, the Harbours Division of the Department of Transport and SITA (Isle of Man) Limited, operators of the Energy-from-Waste facility.

To help launch the scheme, and to coincide with an international programme of events on marine and beach conservation on the 16th and 17th September, the Department has arranged for a series of presentations on marine conservation. Dr Jan de Franeker will present his views on the damage to North Sea marine wildlife caused by littering; Dr Richard Thompson will discuss the consequences of plastic pollution of the North Sea. Representatives of Lancaster City Council will attend the event to help delegates understand how their similar initiative is working.

A number of places are still available for this event. Anyone with an interest in the subject should contact Steven Callister of the Department’s Environment, Safety and Health Directorate, on 685894, to reserve a place. The Marine Litter Awareness Day starts at the Villa Marina, Douglas, at 10.00 a.m. on Friday 15th September and will finish no later then 3.00 p.m. There is no charge for attendance.
