Launch of Junior Hockey Leagues 22 September 2006

The Manx Hockey Association (MHA) is announcing a new scheme for the 2006/07 season: the formation of 4 junior hockey leagues. Due for commencement in October 2006, the leagues will comprise of boys under 11, boys under 13, girls under 11 and girls under 13 categories. A pre-season tournament will take place for each age group on the 8th (U-11 boys and girls) and 15th (U-13 boys and girls) of October at the NSC with the leagues due to start the following week.

Whilst this scheme is designed to provide junior players with regular competition, the ultimate goal is to increase young people’s interest in hockey and introduce those who have not played before.

Five of the Island’s hockey clubs are entering the leagues and are looking for potential players aged between 8-13 years who want to play hockey.

Launch of Junior Hockey LeaguesDominic Hobdell, the newly appointed Hockey Development officer, said:

‘These leagues are a fantastic opportunity for anyone wanting to play hockey with people their own age. The main aim is to provide some friendly and healthy competition. It’s about increasing publicity and giving young people a chance to learn basic skills through supervised training and enjoying themselves too.’

The games themselves will take the format of the increasingly popular ‘mini-hockey’ played on half a full pitch and consisting of 7 players per team.

A spokesman for the Manx Hockey Association stated that this exciting development was

‘a natural follow-on from their participation in the Youth Games over recent years. We look forward to seeing how the leagues develop over the coming years, hopefully with participation by other clubs and, possibly, school teams in the future.’

Anyone interested in finding a junior club to play in or for further information of these leagues should contact Dominic on 651572 or email:
