Manx National Heritage and the Isle of Man Victorian Society Host ‘The Arts and Crafts Movement in the North West of England’ Lecture 19 October 2006

Manx National Heritage will mark the beginning of its winter lecture programme with a public lecture on ‘The Arts & Crafts movement in the North West of England’, which will take place at the Manx Museum on 27th October 2006 at 7.30pm.

The Lecture will be hosted by Manx National Heritage and the Isle of Man Victorian Society and will be presented by Barrie and Wendy Armstrong. The impact of the Arts and Crafts Movement on the applied art and architecture in the North West of England will be discussed with particular reference to Merseyside, Cumbria and Cheshire.

Barrie and Wendy Armstrong have spent the last 10 years not only learning about the complexities of the Arts and Crafts Movement but have also explored the North West of England in search of its Arts and Crafts legacy. The fruit of their labour was the identification of at least 800 possible sites which they visited to record and photograph surviving Arts and Crafts treasures.

Anthea Young, Education Services Officer for Manx National Heritage said:

“This lecture coincides with the rising popularity of the Arts and Craft Movement, amongst the general public and academics alike and we look forward to seeing how the Movement has affected the art and architecture in the North West of England”.

The Lecture will draw upon expertise detailed within their beautifully illustrated book ‘The Arts and Crafts Movement in the North West of England-A Handbook’ written by Barrie and Wendy Armstrong. The handbook, which overflows with scholarship and enthusiasm, also contains practical information for visiting over 700 sites and guide the Arts and Crafts enthusiast through a journey of sculptural and architectural exploration. The book contains over 300 colour illustrations incorporating paintings, stained glass together with additional arts and craft riches.

The lecture will start at 7.30pm and will be held at the Manx Museum Lecture Theatre. Doors open at 7pm and admission is free of charge.
