Breast Screening Call/Recall Service Start Date Announced 27 October 2006

The Department of Health and Social Security is pleased to announce that the Call and Recall Programme for Breast Screening will begin on Monday 20th November 2006.

Steve Rodan MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security said

“Establishing the Breast Screening Call and Recall Programme has been a Department priority for a long time. I am delighted to announce that this service will soon be operational. I must also pay tribute publicly to the generosity of the Isle of Man Anti-Cancer Association who have contributed £50,000 towards the cost of setting up this service.”

Radiographer Niamh Gelder takes up her post as breast screening radiographer at the beginning of November and will begin screening on the 20th November. Self referral forms continue to come into the service on a daily basis, so the first task is to screen those women who have already submitted a self referral form (up to the end of October 2006). The first women to be called for screening will be receiving their letters in February 2007.

Women aged between 50-70 years, registered with GP in the Isle of Man will be invited for breast screening every 2 years. A letter, including an appointment and information leaflet will be sent direct to women at their registered address.

The screening process will call women by GP Practice on rotation, so over the course of the next 2 years all women should receive an invitation to attend for screening. Women who have already been screened (via self referral) will be recalled at their appropriate interval. Any women over the age of 70 will still be able to self-refer themselves for screening if they so wish.

Women under the age of 50 worried about any breast problems should contact their GP who will refer for a specialist opinion.

Breast screening records for women moving from England or to England will be transferred to their new area as part of the programme.

Norman McGregor Edwards, Director of Health Strategy and Performance said

“We have now established procedures to ensure that a high quality screening programme will be in place as from November. The programme will be part of an ongoing Quality Assurance scheme.”

Lesley Dorward, Director of Health Promotion said

“An information and education programme about Breast Screening, including awareness about the scope and limitations of breast call and recall programme will start in November.”
